5-Day Marrakech - Merzouga Desert Route

A full loop of roughly 900 km, from Marrakech over the High Atlas and into the Sahara at Merzouga, returning via the Draa Valley and Ouarzazate.

Marrakech → High Atlas Mountains → Ait Benhaddou → Ouarzazate → Dades Valley
~360 km ~7h drive
Depart Marrakech and climb over the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, stopping for photos at panoramic viewpoints. Visit the UNESCO-listed kasbah of Ait Benhaddou before continuing to the former garrison town of Ouarzazate, the 'door of the desert'. Finish the day driving into the Dades Valley, arriving in time for dinner.

Dades Valley → Todra Gorge → Erfoud → Merzouga Dunes (Camel Trek & Desert Camp)
~300 km ~6h drive
Drive through the rose-hued Dades Valley before entering the dramatic Todra Gorge, with its towering rock walls. Continue via the date-palm oasis town of Erfoud to the edge of the Sahara at Merzouga. In the late afternoon, mount your camel for a sunset trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes, followed by a traditional dinner and an overnight stay in a desert camp under the stars.

Full Day Merzouga Desert Exploration (Khamlia Gnawa Music, Nomad Family Visit & Dunes)

A full day dedicated to the Sahara. Watch the sunrise over the dunes, then set out to explore the desert around Merzouga: visit the Gnawa musicians of Khamlia village for a live performance of their trance-inducing rhythms, share tea with a nomad family living at the edge of the erg, and spend the afternoon among the ever-shifting dunes of Erg Chebbi. A second night in the desert camp under a sky full of stars.

Merzouga → Rissani Souk → Draa Valley → Ouarzazate
~380 km ~7h drive
Sunrise over the dunes before breakfast and a camel ride back to camp. Drive to Rissani, once the region's great caravan crossroads, to browse its ancient souk. Continue south along the palm-lined Draa Valley, Morocco's longest river valley, before turning back toward Ouarzazate for the night.

Ouarzazate → Kasbah Taourirt → High Atlas → Return to Marrakech
~200 km ~4h drive
Morning visit to Kasbah Taourirt, the former residence of the Glaoui pashas and one of the finest examples of traditional earthen architecture in the south. Cross back over the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, with stops at scenic viewpoints, before descending into Marrakech by late afternoon for your departure or onward stay.
